Tom Kovar

At Lafayette, Thomas studied electrospinning for its applications in tissue engineering and drug delivery. Specifically, he studied how to control drug release kinetics by encapsulating drug-loaded electrospun fibers with thermo-responsive polymers. While at Columbia, Thomas hopes to study multiphase phase flow using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computational modeling.

Outside of engineering, Thomas enjoys sports such as basketball, golf and snowboarding.

I worked in the Advanced Process Design and Modeling laboratory on “Correction of drag coefficient in Two Fluid Model (TFM) using CFD-DEM” as my master’s thesis under the supervision of Dr. Navid Mostoufi and Dr. Reza Zarghami at University of Tehran. I have also gained more proficiency through working with professional software packages and learned specialized courses in the field of process design and modeling. I started my Ph.D. research, seeking to investigate the motion of a rising bubble in dense suspensions using MRI and computational modeling. This study will generate a better understanding of bubbling instabilities in multiphase granular flows.

Yijin Li

YIJIN LI PHOTO

During undergraduate study at U of Rochester, Yijin investigated the electrochemical properties of Hydroxyapatites which is a calcium phosphate, commonly found on bone tissue. she also performed a series of reactions to coat single or multiple layers of Hydroxyapatite on metals using electrochemical deposition instruments. In addition, she served as Teaching Assistant for Chemical Reactor Design, Thermodynamics and Chemical Process Analysis. At Columbia University, Yijin plan to focus on the Chemical Engineering side of Energy and Environmental; as well as research under Dr. Chris Boyce and study the multiphase flow behavior with various computational tools.

Yijin is interested in Pen&Ink drawings, jogging and reading in her free time.

Zhongsheng Sang

I majored in materials science during my undergraduate period, and graduated with the honor “Star of Materials”. My research was mainly focused on the materials that are used in energy conversion and storage devices. At Columbia, I investigate the bubbles behavior created in fluidized beds and physics-based, multi-scale computational modeling.

I enjoy watching comedy series and playing chess in my free time.

Kai Yang

At Tsinghua, Kai studied synthesis of modified polymers, graphene oxide/ polyacrylamide hydrogel film. At Columbia, Kai is studying computational modeling of fluidized beds.

In his spare time, Kai likes jogging and skating.
