During the Ph.D. study, Qiang mainly worked on experimental measurement of gas-solid fluidized beds using Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT). Specifically, he developed a virtual experimental strategy and a machine learning approach for tomographic imaging of gas-solid fluidized beds.  By the use of ECT, camera recording, and pressure fluctuation measurements, he experimentally verified that both solid-like and fluid-like states exist in the homogeneous fluidization regime of Geldart A particles and no particle aggregates are present in both states.

At Columbia, Qiang mainly uses both experimental and computational methods to generate insights into the flow and chemical reactions within gas-solid flow systems. More specifically, he is focusing on structured bubbles and Rayleigh-Benard convection in vibro-fluidized beds and is trying to develop continuum models to capture transitions between fluid-like and solid-like behavior in granular flows.

Outside of the laboratory, Qiang enjoys exploring new things.
